This is an overview of all the non-combat skills in EUO.

THIS PAGE NEEDS A LOT OF WORK: the copy is very old, sometimes out of date, poorly written and plain missing for some of the newer skills. The bit on black lung was written around 2 years ago!

Meditation

Press m to meditate. You will regain HP and mana at an increased rate, depending on your skill, but you will also be blind until you move or are hit. Avoid getting hit when meditating, as you may suffer increased damage.

Fishing & Cartography

Get a fishing rod, and use it in the direction of a body of water. Sometimes you'll drag up an old boot, and rumour has it that these boots are often poison resistant. Other times, you'll drag up a sea monster. Be careful and prepare yourself for a fight when fishing.

Fishing is a great way to catch food for yourself and your pet, as well as being the most consistant method for finding treasure maps - see the section on Cartography and Treasure Hunting.

Woodcrafting

Woodcrafting is the combined skills of lumberjacking and of making wooden items, such as staves, torches, and bows. To aquire the raw materials (i.e. logs), use a woodsman's axe in the forest and you might, depending on your skill, chop a log. Careful, however, as you may disturb a wisp.

Then get yourself a pocket knife and use it to carve wooden things. You will need to have logs in your inventory to make anything.

More on Woodcrafting here.

Mining

Buy a mining pick from the provisioners and stand next to a mountain. Press u to use, select the pick, then press the arrow key in the direction of the mountain. Then tape down the F9 key (thesedays you only have to press shift-F9 to repeat-use: bluetak no longer required) to mine your way to victory (however if you are AFK too long you will get booted). Don't catch black lung. If you're really lucky you might dig up a gold nugget, otherwise you'll just dig up ore, the colour of which will depend on your skill. If you're unlucky, you may unearth an angry zorn.

Blacksmithery

Blacksmithery consists of two separate skills:Weaponsmith and Armourer. Both boil down to creating the items of war: metal weapons and armour.

To smelt iron ore, press u to use, select a pair of tongs and press an arrow key in the direction of a brazier.

To make metal weapons and armour, use a either smith's hammer or an armourer's hammer on an anvil whilst having ingots in your inventory. A list of items will then appear that you can make, once again according to your skill, and how many ingots you have.

More on Weaponsmith. More on Armourer.

Lockpicking (A Rogue Class Skill)

Get yourself some lockpicks from the provisioners and simply use them on a locked door or chest. Depending on your skill, you may actually unlock the door or chest. Some locks can never be picked, and often picks break, so keep a good supply of them if this is your bag.

The shortcut key for unlock is j + dir.

Points in security count towards your 125% cap on regular and PD.

Trap Detect and Disarm (A Rogue Class Skill)

Many chests, locked or not, may also trapped. Use the search function (s+dir) to search a chest for a trap. If your skill is high enough, you will detect a trap if one is present. Traps may also be present on the ground, and searching the ground may show up a trap if one is present.

To disarm a trap, use a probe (shift+j+dir) on the trap.

Points in traps count towards your 125% cap on regular and PD.

Stealth (A Rogue Class Skill)

Stealth is the art of moving silently and without being noticed. You can attempt to first hide by pressing H, then moving while hidden. Success in either hiding or moving while hiding will improve your stealth.

You cannot hide when there are players, monsters or NPCs around which can see you, or if you have a light source.

Chances for hiding and moving stealthily are greatly reduced when wearing medium and heavy armour.

Once hidden, you can attempt to backstab (and kill) a target - you must have a shortsword or dagger equipped to pull off a backstab. Backstabbing success is determined by your stealth skill, the target's level, and for player targets, the lightness of their armour. It's very hard to BS a player wearing plate armour, for example.

Points in stealth count towards your 125% cap on regular and PD.

Alchemy

Alchemy is all about making potions & converting materials. Alchemy has its own page here.

Tinkering

Tinkers specialize in the creation of nit nacks. From studs for studded leather to lockpicks. There ability to make certain items that almsot everyone uses makes them important.

More on Tinkering here.

Tailoring

Tailoring is the art of making cloth and leather items. To get started, buy a sewing kit from the provisioner, get yourself some cloth (or leather) and get sewing! More on Tailoring here.

Item Identification

Buy a magnifying glass and use it on an unidentified item to attempt to ID it. Be sure to do your identification in a safe place where your items will not be stolen. The skill required to ID the item with a magnifying glass is proportional to the quality of the item. As with most other skills, you will need 10 item lore to begin identifying basic items. Using a magnifying glass to ID an item will not detect a curse.

Inscription

Inscription is the ability to create a scroll. Scrolls of identity, uncurse, town portal and all the spell scrolls are included. Because of the ability to create spell scrolls, mages might be able to save themselves money by makin thier own spell scrolls and make money by selling them to other players.

Enchanting

Enchanting gives the ability to increase an items quality by using various gems.

Taming

Taming allows players to tame monsters and animals and use them as allies in combat. Some creatures, like the undead, cannot be tamed and others can grow into something stronger.

How / Where can I train these skills?

Skills can be increased simply by using them, but often this process is slow. If you have some spare GP lying around, you can (for many of the skills) buy training in them.

The place to buy training skills is at the University of Tanelorne - located at 135' 66" - you will know it because it is between the twin cities of Montor East & West.

Once there, check out the training rooms, and when you think you have found a trainer, press b (buy) to see what training is on offer.
