Quickstart Guide

It's pretty easy to get started in EUO.

Just download the .exe file, create an account and connect to the server. The general gist really is to get on with some friends, have a laugh and stop when you're sick of it. This was the motivation for writing the game originally. It's not meant to be taken terribly seriously.

So having said that, here's some pro-tips for playing the game.

Character Generation

The main thing to do is pick an avatar you like. Skills & stats can be worked on in game. Most people tend to spend all their level points on strength for the first 15 levels or so, then spend them evenly on dexterity & intelligence after that. Remember, strength gives you HP, but dexterity makes you run from a fight faster, and intelligence increases your magic resisntance, as well as your mana!

Advanced Character Generation

You start out with a few items when you create your character, if you start as a mage, press Shift + C to learn a spell from the scrolls you have. The town you start in is called Nordhaven and has a weapon/armour shop, tool shop, a healer, a pub, and a bank.

It is highly recommended to store high amounts of gold before you go hunting.

As you level, you will most likely want to put your levels into stats like this.

  • Fighter - Level strength until you get 80-100, then level dexterity until you get to 100.
  • Rogue - Level strength until you get to 60, then level dexterity until you get to 150.
  • Mage - Level strength until you get to 60, then level intelligence until you get to 100 and then level strength until you get to 100.

You don't have to follow this guide, however it will make your adventures go smoothly since you'll have a decent amount of HP to take on mobs.

Entering the world

On the server as it is, everybody starts in Nordhaven. With the little money you start with, you can either choose to spend it on armour or potions - It would probably be better to buy extra healing (yellow) potions.

Basic Potions

  • Red potions heal poison.
  • Yellow potions restore health points.
  • Blue potions restore mana points.

Talk to NPC's

Characters ingame with white names above their heads are other players, characters with blue names are good aligned NPC's and characters with gray bars above their heads are neutral aligned NPC's. Make a point of talking to any NPC with a blue name - you'll more than likely be sent on a quest.

When your done looking around town, you might as well head down to the Jail. Exit town by walking south, then head due east, until you see a cave entrance - that would be the Nordhaven Jail, a.k.a. the Newbie dungeon.

  • Nordhaven Jail a.k.a. the Newbie dungeon
    • The newbie dungeon is a place where you can go kill some rats and other low level monsters. Collect all the treasure, sell the stuff you don't need, then spend the money on equipment. When you're feeling tougher and better armed, you can head down to levels 2, 3 & 4 of the newbie dungeon. Beware - opponents get tough pretty quickly though - it would be wise to have some decent armour and plenty of healing potions at the ready.

Leveling up

When you get the blue "You feel experienced" message, head to a shrine and meditate near the fire to increase stats. Each shrine does something different,(see below) Bump strength if you want more HP, bump dexterity if you want to move faster, and bump inteligence if you want more mana.

You have the option to either watch the % of your level go up as you hunt or not. If you choose to see the % of your current level, you'll need this: http://swut.net/euo/files/euo.zip. Just download it to your EUO home directory, unzip it, and run EUO (close/reopen EUO if you download and unzip while ingame). Your "XP to Level" % is located right under your current level.

Shrines

To find a shrine, look in your game files for the "MAP-Shrines" file.

The shrines you find do the following.

Compassion: Dexterity+6
Valor: Strength+6
Honesty: Intelligence +6
Sacrifice: Strength+3 Dexterity+3
Justice: Dexterity+3 Intelligence+3
Honor: Intelligence+3 Strength+3
Spirituality: Dex+2 Int+2 Str+2
Humility: Nothing

Humility does not add any stats but will take up a level if you meditate there, meditating there reduces the amount of time your criminal status lasts.

Dying

Just hit "!" (shift + 1) to respawn in the town to which you are bound (the default town is Nordhaven). Doing this will give you resurrection sickness however, which requires you to meditate at a shrine to cure. Alternatively if you're playing with other people, they might be able to resurrect you with a scroll or spell on the spot. If you are in a party with the person who resurrects you, you will not get resurrection sickness.

Sometimes you cannot respawn, it is most likely because you are on a non magic tile, if this happens simply move off of the tile and try again.

The goal

The goal is to have a bit of fun. Talk to the other players. By all means ask questions, but this manual isn't that bad, nor that hard to read. Try and read it all first before asking 'how to I sell stuff' or 'where do I hunt?'. Get out there and find out for yourself. It's not that hard.
