You can follow this simple method:

Use paint to create the way your sprite looks (In my opinion, its easier than photoshop). One frame of your sprite is 4 tile of 16x16 pixels. The entire sprite needs to be 67x16 (not 64x16, as there is a one pixel space in between frames). It's usually best not to use a lot of movement in your sprite or else it will most likely not look good animated.

If you try to save this image as a .jpeg in paint, the colour is degraded. Cut and paste the image onto photoshop and save as .jpeg with the highest quality.

You can test out your new avatar by using photoshop to open EUO\pics\btiles23.pcx, look for the 4 frames of your current avatar and cut/paste your new one over the top of your current sprite ingame (make a back-up first). Start the game and test out the random frame changing in-game.

NOTE: Enlarge your sprite to 32x32, this is how its seen in-game. Also, when animated, the 4 tiles will be shown randomly (not necessarily in the order you made them in the 67x16 tileset).
