Riksta: /* Wands for pets */: added hp/int wands and fixed some typos

Pets are tame monsters that follow along and fight beside you. With the right attention and care, they can make a great addition to the adventuring life!

Overview
Offer food or items on various monsters to tame them. Feed them in the same way to keep them happy and gain their loyalty. Let them kill other monsters to gain experience, grow stronger and even evolve.

Taming
Pets are generally acquired by taming wild creatures. Many critters are tamable; maybe about 70% of non-undead.

Offer food (shift e) to attempt to tame a creature. Start on rabbits and cows, then move on to rats and other weak dungeon critters, then goblins and other humanoids.

Some creatures require you to use an item (shift u) on the creature instead. Think of it as offering the item to the creature.

Players are allowed to only have one active pet at a time. If you currently have a pet and attempt to train another, your current pet will disappear shortly after you tame a new pet. You stable a pet, and then train a new one. You can swap active and stabled pets for 500 gp.

Note: the taming skill will only increase if you are within 5% of the minimum skill to tame a creature and no more than 15% over the minimum skill. If your taming skill isn't increasing, then go tame something harder! Your taming skill will also increase when you feed your pet.

Diet
Having gotten a pet, it must be kept fed in order to keep it happy. To feed, simply offer food or items to the pet just as you did to tame it in the first place.

All creatures have a preferred diet. Most creatures are carnivores, some are herbivores (e.g. rabbit) and some are omnivores (e.g. rat). Some critters have a favourite food (a treat), which makes taming easier and boosts loyalty. E.g. rats prefer cheese, and rabbits favour carrots.

The Zorn is the only metalivore (metal eater) in EUO. Offer (shift u) to feed your zorn metal items. It doesn't have a favourite food but will eat any metal ingot, any medium or heavy armour, metal ores, etc. It will not eat weapons or shields though.

Some pets will only eat one type of food, specific to that creature. Some examples of specific foods:
* sulphur for hellspawn
* clear potions for water demons

Finally, pets digest food and get hungry a little faster than players do.

Loyalty & Bonding
Look (l) at a pet to see how happy (loyal) it is. Talk (t) to the pet to see how hungry it is. If you stay with your pet and feed it, it will become loyal. If you starve it or leave it alone, it will become disloyal. A disloyal pet will eventually go wild, and may even attack you!

A pet will bond with its owner after 60 real life minutes spent with the pet (the pet has to be able to see you!). Once a pet has bonded, it can be resurrected with a 'raise pet' scroll. A non-bonded pet that dies cannot be raised and is lost forever.

For wand of happiness see Wands for pets below.

Getting Stronger and Growing Up
Pets gain experience for all kills that they help with, which gains them levels with appropriate HP and Mana bonuses. Essentially, if the pet has not reached its maximum potential (i.e., level), a pet will leech some of the XP from any kills made. However, once a pet reaches its maximum level, you will gain all the XP from kills regardless of whether the pet or you made the kill.

Some creatures will 'grow up' (similar to Pokemon evolution) at level 25 and possibly again at level 50. The best example of this is the drake to dragon 'evolution'! You can't tame a dragon; only a drake, and then you have to go level your drake up to turn it into a dragon. It will take 100% skill to tame a drake. Drakes are carnivores but are fond of gold nuggets.

For wand of pet constitution see Wands for pets below.

Slash commands and Pet commands
Once you have a pet, use:

/petname newname

to name it. use the following commands to order it around:

* stay : pet will stay and not follow it's owner at all
* follow : normal follow and attack mode - the pet is rather aggressive
* heel : pet will follow but not attack unless provoked
* guard : pet will follow but only attack enemies that are attacking you
* wander : pet will wander around and do whatever it likes!

A warning about 'stay' : a pet will slowly lose loyalty if you tell it to stay and it's on a different map level to its owner, with the exception to this being if the pet is in its master's house. The pet will of course get hungry and may starve.

Pet tomes
It is possible to unlearn spells from pets and teach them new ones. At Strangiato a spell known by a pet can be unlearned (ie. deleted) for 999gp, or a spell can be unlearned and saved as a pet tome for 9999gp. Not all spells can be saved as a pet tome though.
Read the pet tome to teach your pet the spell. Pets cannot learn more spells than they initially know and the owner must have the minimum taming skills required for the pet. A pet will loose spells they learned from pet tomes when they evolve.

|}

* Wands of pet constitution and intelligence can only be used once. An improved wand can be used in addition to a regular wand to increase HP or INT by a total of 40%. Look (l) at your pet to see which wands you've used.

Pet Transfers
To transfer a pet, use

/transferpet playername

to move the pet to a new player. The target player will need to have a pet transfer deed in their inventory before the transfer may proceed, which may be bought for adamantium coins. The bond timer is not reset, so it would be wise to transfer the pet after it has bonded. The target player should also either not have a pet, or have their current pet stabled before the the transfer takes place. It is not possible to transfer a pet with non standard spells.

Stables
There are stables located in Strangiato. For the modest sum of 500 gp, you can leave an active pet in the stables. You can thus have two pets tamed at once, one pet in the stables, and a second pet active.

You can also buy pet runes, which are portable stables, with adamantium coins. These pet runes allow you to have four pets tamed at once and also allow you to switch between them without having to go back to Strangiato each time.

Weapon types
The weapon types correlate exactly with the weapon skills. The weapon types with some example weapons are:

*Fighter class weapons
**Longswords: longsword, broadsword, bastard sword, scimitar, falchion, claymore
**Maces: club, flail, mace, morning star, war hammer, great maul, lucern hammer
**Axes: cleaver, axe, hatchet, tomahawk, labrys, 2-headed axe
**Polearms: halberd, spear, scythe, glaive, hoe, trident
*Rogue class weapons
**Ranged: short bow, long bow, crossbow, sling
**Shortswords: dagger, shortsword, main gauche, rondel, machete
**Foils: rapier, kryss, epee
*Monk class weapons
**Unarmed: bare hands, gloves, neko-de, katar, brass knuckles
*Unclassed weapons
**Staves: crooks, staves, gnarled staves and shillelaghs

All of the above weapon types are Melee weapons, with the exception of ranged.

When you look at a weapon in your inventory, or are buying one, the weapon type (ie the weapon skill) is displayed in the window with all the other weapon information, such as required strength, damage range, damage type, speed, etc.

Different weapons have not only different damage ranges, but also different speeds. Just because a halberd does more damage than a dagger, doesn't necessarily make it a better weapon: as the dagger is faster (this statement also does not imply the dagger is better than the halberd, it is purely an example).

Weapon damage types
Different weapons also do different damage types: ie slashing, piercing & bludgeoning damage. Some monsters are vulnerable to certain damage types.

*Undead: vulnerable to bludgeoning damage
*Hellspawn: vulnerable to slashing damage
*Dragons: vulnerable to piercing damage

Also, The fighter class weapons (axes, swords, maces and polearms) as well as unarmed attacks can be used to bash open locked doors or chests, but watch out for traps. See Chests, Locks and Traps for more.

Unarmed-Combat Weapons
This oxymoron actually describes a class of weapons that while equipped, will increase your skill in unarmed combat. While these weapons increase the average non-critical damage per hit, your attacking speed may be slowed somewhat, and the rate of criticals will be reduced.

Armour
Armour can be equipped in the following slots:

* Head: caps, helms, coifs
* Body: mail, gi
*Legs: greaves, leggins, gi
*Hands: gloves, gauntlets
*Feet: boots

There are 4 basic armour weights, or classes:

* Unarmoured: cloth (or not wear anything at all)
* Light: padded, leather
* Medium: ring, chain, scale
* Heavy: splint, plate

In general, the more armour you are wearing, the higher your defence. Wearing armour is subject to strength requirements.

For unarmoured fighters (monks), they must be fully wearing nothing or armour of the unarmoured grade in order to receive attack & defence bonuses.

Armour weights and classes
Gaining defence by wearing medium or heavy armour is subject to having skill points in fighter. Light requires points in rogue or fighter.

Eg, if your highest fighter skill is say 50%, and you have 10 def worth of medium and heavy armour on, then you only gain 50% x 10 def = 5 points worth of defence. If you had 100% in a fighter skill, then you would get the full 10 points of defence from that armour. For light armour, you need 100% in either a rogue skill or a fighter skill to get the full defence from that armour.

Rings and Neckwear
Apart from being decorative, rings and neckware are often enchanted with magical effects such as nightvision enhancement, stat boosts and defence enhancements.

Provisions
*Torches: useful for creating light in a dark place, torches will be automatically extinguished when you enter the daylight
*Keys: usualy obtained for quests - used for unlocking doors
*Gem: view a gem to see a birds eye view of your location
*Pocket watch: useful for telling the time, if you have one the current in-game time will appear in the status area
*Pocket knife: use on logs to carve items (see thread on woodworking)
*Mining pick: used for mining ore
*Fishing pole: fishing
*Smiths hammer: blacksmithing (see thread on smithing)
*Tongs: used for making metal items (see thread on smithing)
*Woodsman's axe: chopping trees to obtain logs
*Lockpick: picking locks on doors and chests (not all locks are pickable) (press j)
*Probe: used for disarming traps (press J)
*Sextant: will inform you of your position on the current map - if you are outdoors
*Grapple (grappling hook): use to climb mountains (press k). Mountain climbing is dangerous!

Potions
Stock up on plenty of yellow (healing) potions. Blue potions restore mana, and red potions cure poison. All potions are used via the p key, but it might be a good idea to bind them to one of the numeric hot keys. Press CTRL+number when in the potion menu to bind the selected potion to the selected number key.

*Yellow : restores health
*Blue : restores mana
*Khaki: 10 seconds of full rage bar

Scrolls
These are scrolls that any type of player can use, & which are invaluable to you surviving EUO. They are as follows:

* Town Portal Scroll: Creates a town portal at your location which will transport you back to your chosen bind town when walked into. Useful for restocking during adventuring & allowing people to travel to you to party with. You can set your 'home town' by typing /bind in many of the towns around the land of New Sosaria. Nordhaven, Izumi, & other Townes further afield can be used as your home base . The player who creates the portal determines its life-span: it exists for a two-way trip only before disappearing; thus if you are partied, you should always go last if you created the portal!

* Identify Scroll: Unless you invest in the identify skill, these scrolls allow you to identify unknown (orange) magical items. Drop the item on the floor, (u)se the scroll in its direction.

*Resurrection Scroll: Unless you have a high level mage with you, this is the best way to restore lost party members! Bear in mind that the freshly risen character will be very weak, and prone to returning to the grave if they are in a dangerous area!

*Uncurse Scroll: Obvious, really- uncurses magical items. The item has, like with the identify scroll, to be on the ground!

*Unweld Scroll: This is for when you either wield a cursed item by mistake, or have your items cursed (it can happen!). Using this scroll removes any cursed items from being (R)eadied- it does not, however, uncurse the item.

There are quite a few more scrolls to be aware of. See the Inscription page for more information.

Tomes
When you want to learn a new spell (i.e., gain the ability to cast that spell), go to a Scribe Shoppe (the shops marked with a scroll like sign) and buy a Tome containing that spell.

To learn that spell read the tome like any other book with r, select the Tome and the spell will be learned. You only need to learn a spell once. To then see the chance of casting that spell, press z until you see the list of your known spells - success rates of all the spells you know will be listed here.

Books
Books are scattered throughout the world of EUO. For the most part they cannot be bought - however after some particular quests, there is a set volume of written articles that can be purchased as reprints from the Library.
After obtaining a book, it can be read at any time by pressing r.

Here are a couple of visual examples of works that may be seen in the world.
Background

Roughly a year ago (January 10, 2010 to be exact), Egg held a forum-competition for writing literature for euo to be read in game. Many members participated. The winner was Grue, who wrote an epic tale of a "Journal of Gunter the Lost," divided into several parts. The competition had many other books and writers that were accepted, but there was only one winner.

Food
Food can be found or bought. Food includes meat, cheese, bread and fish.

Reagents
Knowledge of reagents is not necessary unless you have an interest in Alchemy. Some reagents can be bought, and some can only be found. Reagents include blood moss, sulphurous ash, black pearls, ginseng, garlic, spider's silk, mandrake and nightshade. More on reagents here.

* Head: caps, helms, coifs
* Body: mail, gi
*Legs: greaves, leggins, gi
*Hands: gloves, gauntlets
*Feet: boots

There are 4 basic armour weights, or classes:

* Unarmoured: cloth (or not wear anything at all)
* Light: padded, leather
* Medium: ring, chain, scale
* Heavy: splint, plate

*Grapple (grappling hook): use to climb mountains (press k). Mountain climbing is dangerous!
*Raft: for water travel.
*Sewing kit: for tailoring
*Mortar and pestle: for making potions and other alchemy
*Magnifying glass: used to identify objects: requires skill in item identification
*Skull key: used to open locked doors (key is destroyed after one use)
*Polypile wand: put 3 items of similar type on the ground and zap them with the wand. Maybe something will happen, maybe something won't.

More on Magic and Spellcasting here.

Books
Books are scattered throughout the world of EUO. For the most part they cannot be bought - however after some particular quests, there is a set volume of written articles that can be purchased as reprints from the Library.
After obtaining a book, it can be read at any time with the "R" (SHIFT+r) command.

Strength<br>
Strength affects how many Hit Points (HP) you have, adds some Magic Resistance, and determines much equipment and items you can carry. Strength (in combination with dexterity) also affects the amount of bonus non-magical damage you deal using weapons.

Dexterity<br>
Dexterity affects how quickly you can move and adds some Magic Resistance. Having a lot of dexterity can also affect your defense (depending on the type of armour worn), and also affects (in combination with strength) the amount of bonus non-magical damage you deal using weapons.
Intelligence<br>
Intelligence affects how much Mana you have to use for spells, and has a significant affect on your Magic Resistance. Spells also increase in effectiveness when the user has a high intelligence.
HP<br>
Hit Points determine the amount of damage you can take before you eventually kick the bucket. Naturally, once your Hit Points equals zero, you're dead. On the regular server, you can resurrect yourself by pressing ALT+F1 which instantly resurrects you in the town in which you are bound.

Overview
There are two main methods of travelling around New Sosaria, mundane and magical. With all of these methods it is possible to get almost anywhere, above and below ground.

Mundane
On Foot
Most ground travel is affected by the type of terrain you are attempting to traverse. It is easier to move along a well-worn road than to navigate through a dark forest, therefore the different terrain types have different movement penalties.

Note that while much terrain is passable, some of it is dangerous. Swamps can poison you with their noxious foliage, whereas only the most foolhardy adventurer will brave the searing heat and venture across a lava flow.

On Horse's/Cow's/Rabbit's/Drake's back
An experienced Adventurer will buy a mount in Dryden to travel faster through forest and hills. Blazing Saddles sell summons (shift+c) for white horses. A white horse costs 100,000 gold pieces and the player has to be at least level 50. Summons for premium mounts like brown horses, cows, rabbits and drakes have to be paid for with adamantium coins. Drakes, unlike other mounts, are able to fly over mountains and water. To summon a brown horse the player has to be at least level 10, for a cow level 50, for a rabbit level 75 and for a drake level 50.

By Grapple
The grapple is an extremely dangerous form of transportation and is the only manual means of traversing mountain ranges apart from flying. Many an adventurer has fallen to his death while trying to cross mountains.

Grapples can be obtained by completing a particular quest.

Note: Grapples will work on regular mountains only, they will not work on the high peaks.

By Raft
Rafts are the cheap adventurer's boat, useful for navigating the watery surface world. They can be made by a skilled woodcrafter. It is worth noting that rafts are quite heavy, and you will take damage by traversing the high sea.

Use (u) a raft on a water tile to board your raft.

You can disembark (x) to the shore, while your raft will be automatically collected.

Note: Rafts will only work on outdoors maps and cannot be used in most townes or dungeons.

By Ship
The best way to travel over the sea is by using a ship. Not only are they safer on the high sea than a raft but they are also armed with cannons for protection against the various sea creatures. Ships can be boarded by a larger party of players as well. Conveniently ships are stored by magical means in a bottle. Ships in the bottle can be found in treasure caves or while fishing, but they are quite rare.

Use (u) a ship in the bottle on a water tile to board your ship.

You can disembark (x) to the shore, while your ship will be automatically collected.

Fire (f dir) your cannons to defend yourself and the ship against sea creatures.

By Charter Ships
At this time, ship travel is restricted to chartered vessels that operate between key townes. You will need a ticket in order to take each of the chartered routes. Most tickets are obtained by completing a quest.

Walk onto the center of the ship at a port and press space. This will transport you to the docks of the other towne.

Here is a list of the current charters:
* Shoreline and Mon Ferrato
* Shoreline and Kingswood
* Port Izumi and Dryden
* Port Izumi and Buccaneer's Den

Magical
Town Portals
No-one really knows who created the first town portal spell. They have been in use for a while, however no-one has stepped forward to claim their right of creation. Arcanists suggest a connection between emergence of town portals and the loss of the moon Trammel and the disappearance of moongates. Mystery aside, be grateful for their existence!

Town portals conenct your current location with your bound town. See the /bind command for more details. The default bound town for all new players is Nordhaven.

Read (r) a town portal scroll and indicate a direction to create a portal.The portal will disappear when you return back through it.

In Por Blink
The original Blink spell was deemed a failure as it transported many an unlucky caster into solid rock or off unexpected cliffs. Since then the Blink spell has been refined (through the loss of many an apprentice) with various safety features. Some would say that it is too safe as it will often refuse to transport you at all.

See magic and spellcasting for more info.

Cast Blink (c IP dir) and indicate a direction to hop a short distance.

Note: Some maps are marked as no blink and the spell will automatically fail if cast.

Mark and Recall
The Mark and Recall spells work together to allow a Mage to remember a particular location and to be able to return there instantly. After the infamous Nordhaven Museum theft the use of the Mark spell has since been restricted.

Cast Mark (c KPY) to remember your current location.

Cast Recall (c KOP) to return to the last remembered location.

Note: The Mark spell will not work in dungeons, to prevent a practice known as reverse clearing.

See magic and spellcasting for more info.

Other Magic
Other forms of magical transport exist, so don't be surprised if you see portals of many shapes and forms out in the wild. The bold and prepared adventurer should take advantage of such magic, for who knows - it may lead you somewhere new and exciting...
