Morsetlis: /* Adamantium */

Default (ordinary) materials
In EUO, wood and steel are the default materials. For example a longsword is simply labelled as such (with no prefix, or sometimes prefixeded as ordinary), and the fact that is made from steel is implied. There is no explicit steel material in EUO, and for that matter, there (as of recently) no explicit wooden weapons. You can't make a steel staff or a wooden shortsword. A staff is made wood, but the woodyness of it is implied, or intrinsic.

Technote: as far as mining, ores and ingots go, an ordinary ore is implied to contain iron, and an ordinary ingot is an iron ingot. When creating steel weapons (eg an ordinary longsword) the fact that the iron ingot is being converted to steel (with carbon impurities) is totally implied. I did actually think to have one of the ingredients of making a steel weapons and armour some sort of charcoal, and may yet do so!

Item Material Equivalences
Many of the item materials that are available for metal also exist for wood, cloth and leather. They have different names, but their intrinsic properties are the same.

Here is a summary of the different names for each material type:
metal || wood || cloth || leather
copper || oak || - || boiled
silver || silverleaf || silverweave || -
gold || ash || goldweave || -
blackrock || ebony || darkweave || -
adamantium || - || - || studded

Copper
For wood, Oak is the material equivalent to copper

For leather, Boiled Leather is the material equivalent to copper

In EUO, Copper is an element found naturally as an ore, and can be smelted to create ingots (using copper smelting tongs of course), with which weapons and armour can be made.

In Real Life, copper wasn't used to make weapons (probably because in elemental form it is quite soft for a metal): however an alloy of copper, zinc and tin called Bronze was. Bronze was used for weapons before modern steel was discovered/invented (steel is an 'alloy' of iron carbon).

However EUO is an MORPG, not RL. In EUO, copper weapons and armour have the following characteristics:

* are 20% lighter (therefore require less STR to equip and are lighter in the backpack)
* 20% faster
* copper armour has 10% better defense than regular armour
* copper weapons do 20% more damage than regular weapons
* copper weapons (and armour) are about 20% LESS durable (ie will wear our more quickly)

Brass
Common brass (in EUO and RL) is an alloy of 70% copper and 30% zinc. To make brass ingots in euo, have 7 copper ores in backpack and 3 zinc ores, and use smelting tongs on a brazier. Brass ingots can then be 'hammered flat' into brass sheets by a weaponsmith or an armourer. Brass sheets are useful for tinkers to make things with.

Technote: in EUO brass is NOT a material! Brass ingots and brass sheets are unique items: a 'brass ingot' is not an ingot with a brass prefix. You cannot therefore create brass weapons and armour.

Silver
For wood, Silverleaf is the material equivalent to silver

For cloth, Silverweave is the material equivalent to silver

Silver is mined and smelted. Silver is known for its anti-undead properties, thus silver items have the following properties:

* silver armour partially reflects damage sustained from undead.
* silver weapons do double damage vs undead and lycanthropes.

Gold
For wood, Ash is the material equivalent to gold

For cloth, Goldweave is the material equivalent to gold

Gold has 3 basic forms: nuggets, coins and ingots. Nuggets can be found mining, and can be smelted into either gold coins or ingots (50 gp per nugget OR 10 nuggets required to make an ingot). Coins can by polypiled into ingots (1000gp makes 1 gold ingot), and gold ingots can be then used to create weapons and armour.

In RL no one would use gold to make weapons and armour, being extremely soft and heavy! However:

* each gold item readied adds 1 permanent radius of light to the wearer.

Diamond
Diamond weapons can be created by combining any weapon and 10 diamonds by use of an enchanting wand. Min enchanting skill required 75%.

* diamond weapons give 20% increase to attack strength.
* diamond items are 2x as durable as ordinary items.

Blackrock
For wood, Ebony is the material equivalent to blackrock

For cloth, Darkweave is the material equivalent to blackrock

Blackrock can be found by experienced miners but it must be processed by an alchemist into 'blackrock ore' to be of any use. Once treated it can be smelted into blackrock ingots ready for smithing. Blackrock items have the following properties:

* blackrock weapons do 50% more damage than regular weapons.
* blackrock armour has 25% more defense than regular armour.
* blackrock items are 60% more durable than regular items.

Adamantium
For leather, Studded Leather is the material equivalent of adamantium.

Adamantium is a metal alloy whose ingredients are still unknown. For this reason, adamantium items are very rare.

* adamantium armour has 50% more defense than regular armour.

Venomous and Vampyric
These 'materials' are alchemist's concoctions.

* vampyric weapons steal a variable amount of life from the target.
* venomous weapons poison the target.

Glass
Glass weapons will kill anything with one hit, however the weapon will be destroyed in the process.

Mid 1989
Max Breedon (aka eggmceye), 14 years old, gets his hands on a copy of Ultima 5 for Commodore 64 from a friend at school, and immediatlely falls in love with the box, the map & the 8 sides of 5.25" floppy disk.

Mid 1992
Egg (age 17) gets a copy of Nethack. It did little to inspire at the time, however it's worth noting since early versions of EUO were meant to be a multiplayer Nethack-like (or rogue-like).

July 29, 1998 (approx)
Warcraft 2 clan buddy and good-ol-boy Astro (Adam Maxwell) asks Egg if he can write him a dice rolling progam for DnD. Egg gets ideas and the concept of a 4 player dungeon crawler is born.

July 30, 1998
The next day, Egg goes to his crappy dayjob at Alcatel Australia (C++ debugger at this stage) and starts his first Balrog notebook (the name Balrog taken from LOTR), instead of doing work. Early design specs called for a game server that could accomodate 4 players, where there would be real time player movement & combat, and maps were either randomly generated or prefab. This initial High Level Design was directly inspired by Diablo (a four player server with random maps, and RT combat, etc), however graphics were going to be implemented using ncurses (ie, it was going to look pretty much like rogue or nethack).

Click here for a scan of the first page of the Balrog notebook

Coding was probably started immediately, on the company's HPUX (HP Unix) servers. Soon ported to linux so that development could continue outside work hours.

August 15, 1998
It's unknown when a working Balrog build where actual players could connect and move around was 'finalised', but a build dated 15th August, 1998 actually exists and works (it is rough as guts however). More info & screenshots.

September 1998
It's hard to pin down exactly when, but it was decided to use allegro (then a graphics library for linux) for a tile based Balrog at around this time. An early version of Joshua Steele's Ultima 4 tileset was used, and the idea to make Balrog an Ultima inspired multiplayer game was born.

It is interesting to note that for quite a while, possibly a couple of years (not that Balrog was being worked on a lot in these early days), Ncurses support was retained (a makefile option). It was finally ditched once it became a burden.

1999-2000
Early draft of the Balrog manual completed. Balrog renamed to Egg's Ultima Online. Work extremely slow, usually in spurts of a couple of weeks between months off. Overall frustration with linux as a development platform slows progress.

November 2000
EUO finally ported to Windows, however, it was using djgpp and some really crappy BSD socket library for networking. It totally did not work with Winsock 2.0, and AFAIK, there is still no djgpp support for windows sockets, not that the author has been looking very hard.

Also around this time that Adam Maxwell returns from his overseas holiday to inspect the work created at his request in 1998. Looking nothing like his dice roller as originally conceived, he shows no visible interest in EUO whatsoever (absolutely no offense taken, mind you).

EUO would have been shelved totally from this time till around June 2002. This version would have had support for more than 4 players, primitive quest system, maped would have been complete, spawners, etc. There was probably no repeat use skills (ala UO) at this stage, such as weapon types, magery, etc. It would have all been class based using DnD rules for Thac0, AC, etc based on class/level.

March 11, 2002
swut.net forums created, but for different reason altogether (ozwl).

June 2002 (probably)
Egg pulls his finger out and decides to resurrect EUO, by getting it to build natively under windows (thus requiring proper winsock support) using Visual C++. This mostly meant rewriting the socket code to work with winsock, which meant lots of research and googling.

July 2002
Egg, a member of Something Awful Forums, posts a thread asking if there would be any interest in a multiplayer Ultima 5 (titled something like Bigger than morrowind or Everquest, it's Egg's Ultima 5, online). The crowd response was unexpected and very encouraging, and a tentative date about a week into the future was set to have a working Alpha online.

In this time, a bit of work would have went mainly into getting the server stable, and running more like a persistent world (eg U0), rather than an instance of one (Diablo). If the author remembers rightly, a chat system was frantically added in these last few days, among other things.

July 10, 2002
The alpha is complete, and the annoucement is made. SA forum members immediately start connecting in the half dozens. It's estimated that most of those who tried to connect in these first days couldn't connect properly due to all sorts of shitty network code and other bugs and probably never tried to connect again.

The first player's name was 'fuck' - thanks SA. It was also this day that Oceanman was created, named after a Ween song. The Oceanman character that exists on the current version now is the exact same character (while eggmceye may have actually been recreated), thus making Oceanman the oldest character on EUO, even if it is the creator/author's own avatar.

July 17, 2002
Chat is logged for the first time.

July 31, 2002
Egg emails Josh Steele asking for his blessing to use his U4 tileset for EUO, and gets it.

October 16, 2002
Egg emails Ultima Reconstructed asking to be listed on their site with all the other Ultima remakes and inspired games. It wasn't until April 2003 that a reply was obtained (however it changed the course of EUO history for ever).

October 29, 2002
EUO is shut down due to complete lack of forum interest (the SA forums was the only mode of advertisment for EUO at this time).

April 3, 2003
Someone posts on the swut forums wondering where EUO had gone, after someone else linked to it from XU4 - Ultima IV recreated forums on sourceforge. Egg fires up the EUO server and starts tinkering with the code again, after 6 months off. The EUO server has not been shutdown since (except for 12 hours or so when Egg had a nervous breakdown or something).

April 23, 2003
Co-incidentally (within 20 days of EUO becoming live again), Egg finally gets a reply from Ultima Reconstruction: EUO is listed and a steady flow of Ultima enthusiasts try out EUO.

May 1, 2003
Number #1 EUO Personality Broden joins for the first time. Broden's influence on EUO is highly underestimated: not only did he make a tonne of maps, such as Abyss, Ogretown, his Keep, & Shoreline, but he was one of the first players to genuinely care for the fledgling game & and its community. Nobody else (with Extell coming a close thesedays however) has given more input to the evolution of this game & moral support to its creator.

June 10, 2003
The first of only 2 ever DM'd EUO games is held on a private server. The contestants were Broden, Mandrake and Dvalin. Apart from everything that went wrong, it was a smashing success.

August 5, 2003
Another EUO personality, Neinar, submits EUO to mpogd.com and the influx of Tibia rejects begins.

August 11, 2003
MACRODAEMON logs on for the first time; created purely to kill AFK macroers in a time of great cost-of-bandwidth conciousness. MACRO soon evolves into the retarded cousin and spends most of his time being drunk or telling stupid jokes incorrectly.

October 2, 2003
EUO version 1.0 released; with server side player saves (as opposed to player data stored on the clients' computers) being the most notable improvement.

October 16, 2003
Permanent death server created.

March 24, 2004
EUO servers move to the US to save on bandwidth costs.

August 15, 2005
This Wiki manual becomes active.

If the author remembers rightly, a chat system was franticly added in these last few days, among other things.

Troubleshooting
The patcher is doing nothing - it just hangs!
Get this replacement patcher, unzip it into your EUO directory and run it by hand (ie by double clicking on it). Then try connecting again.

Note: neither patcher works well with proxies at the moment.

I can't see at night time or in dungeons. All I get is a black screen!
There are 2 possible solutions to this: try these in order:

* change your desktop colour depth to either 16 or 32 bpp: 24 bit has reportedly caused this problem
*Your CPU doesn't support MMX instrcuctions

Quit the game, then try putting the following line in client.cfg:
old_lighting=1

How do I play on the permadeth server?
Read this: Introduction to PD

How do I connect to a different server, eg the PD server?
The main server that the EUO shard runs on is euo.swut.net and the port is 26667.

To change the server:port value, edit client.cfg, so it looks something like this:

server=euo.swut.net
port=26667

Alternatively, download the EUO Launcher. Bear in mind that PD and NG servers run a different build of EUO than regular. Please read the Alpha Installation page for more info on connecting to these servers.

EUO spits out some weird graphics related error at start up
Try changing desktop display depth - 32 is ideal, then try 16 or 24 bpp.

Configuration
Can I play fullscreen?
Yes, press F12 once the game is loaded.

Can I turn the music off?
Yes - press M (shift m)

How do I bind spells to the F keys?
Spells can be bound to F1 to F8 - press shift and the Fkey to bind a spell to that key.

How do I bind items to the number keys?
When viewing, using or readying, press a key from 1 to 0 to bind the currently selected item to that key.

Misc Play Questions
How much can I carry?
Your maximum load is proportional to your strength, and differs from server to server. Your maximum load is on your stats display.

How do I level up?
This depends on the server ...
* Regular : travel to a shrine and meditate near the flame. The shrine you meditate at will determine your stat gain. More on Shrines here.
* PD : press @ then press s, d, or i to select how you want to distribute your new stat points.
* NG : There are no player levels on the NG server.

I missed some message or text!
Press the page up and page down keys to scroll through old messages.

I'm doing a kill quest, but the target is good aligned and I can't attack him!
Talk to the target first, using t-dir. The target will then turn evil and attack you. This shouldn't happen anymore since kill targets start off neutral (grey).

I forgot my password - can you tell me what it is?
Click here to recover your password.

Where did my player merchant go?
He probably got removed for having nothing for sale - and was thus wasting space. Be sure to keep your merchant well stocked, and incase of him disappearing, keep withdrawing any funds he might be holding for you.

My longswords (or insert other skill here) won't go over 50 - I have only 25 dex ...
Longswords require 50 dex to get 100 in skill.

My woodcarving won't go over 25 - is there a stat requirement on it?
No. You can only train woodcarving to 25 by chopping trees alone. To get it above 25, carve things with a pocket knife or buy training. (is this out of date info?)

How long will I be a criminal for?
30 mins per kill: you must sit out this time ingame - the crim timer isn't counted down when you're not logged on. You can also meditate at the Humility Shrine to reduce your crim time more quickly.

Boss daemons and balrons aren't dropping any magic loot - is this right?
Now boss daemons and balrons drop both artifacts and normal magical equipments. So do imps.

Development
If/when will you add feature XYZ?
When I get around to and/or feel like it. The likelyhood of something getting worked on goes by this forumla:

Importance of the feature x My enthusiasm in the feature
_________________________________________

difficulty of the feature

How about mouse ops?
Almost a flat no, mainly as it would take a lot of work to implement.

How about large maps, ala Ultima 5's 512x512? or U4's 256x256 tiles?
Probably not, due to poor early EUO design. Tho the continent is currently around 300x100 tiles.

How about a single level map, ala Ultima 6?
No - EUO is (intentionally!) based off U5, not U6. This feature also implies large maps - see above.

What about a player-trade screen?
Unlikely.

What about a sortable inventory - or even bags?
Maybe one day - don't hold your breath.

What about player housing?
Houses are currently for sale for RL money : details here.

Can I get the map editor?
The map editor is available for download on the downloads page.

If I make a map, will you use it?
If it's good, yes - and you'll be credited for it. Don't make maps expecting a free avatar or anything like that though.

Can I get the server?
No.

Can I be a mod or a GM?
No chance.

You're a low level person, you don't know any players & you want to change all that! The best way to do this, and be able to take on tougher monsters, is to group together with other players. Players in a party share Experience points, and so different classes can work together. These commands will let you do that:

Party slash (/) commands
*/inv playername: Invite. This invites a player into your party. Upon receiving an invitation, the invited player must confirm it by typing /accept. However, you cannot invite someone into your party if they are already in a party.

*/leave: Leave a party. This will cause you to leave a party you are in. Not only useful for disbanding a group, this is sometimes required when parties have changed hands. When a player leaves the game, they will automatically leave any party they are in: thus, if you are unlucky enough to get kicked, & are in a party, you must be re-invited back in!

*/list: Lists the members of the party you are in: useful for checking if you're all partied up correctly!

*/p: Starting typed messages with /p will allow you to party chat, where all chat only goes to other members of your party. This is in a tasteful green, and is the best way to bond as fellow hunters.

Effects of Partying
* As already mentioned, you will share any experience points received from killing monster, as long as you are within range of the party.
* If you die, you can be ressurected by a party member and not suffer from resurrection sickness.
* You will see the health of each party member as a red bar and percentage on your status page.
* If a party member goes invisible, you will still be able to see them, although they will be greyed out.
* You can chat to everyone in the party.
* There is also an experience bonus for each additional member in the party.

General Manners when being Partied
*Don't scoff items/treasure that is dropped on the ground. Its best to leave all items on the ground until identified so that they can be honourably shared amongst those who need them most. Gold, on the other hand, is probably best collected by one member & shared out equally. Fairness means players will want to travel with you again- sharing resources, such as potions, will always help the experience.

*Don't beg much higher levels to party- its dull for both players, as there's no challenge. If a much higher level player wants to train you, they'll usually offer. If you're partied with people who are generally tougher than you, its good manners to help them out in a support role- i.e. heal them, resurrect them etc

*Use the chat feature: its there for a reason- take time to chat, as it heightens the experience. The afterglow when you've jointly taken down a tough monster is great!

*Use the strengths of your characters- mages at the back, healing & casting, fighters at the front, thieves scouting etc.

*Lastly- don't run madly ahead without consideration for the rest of your party. If you run into 7 Balrons with attendant Daemon guards, not only will your character die, but most likely the entire party. Lure monsters instead of rushing them, unless your entire party has a gung-ho spirit!

*Advertise, but don't spam, the Global Chat channel for other similar level players. They might be around- don't be clique'y, get out there & party with anyone who wants to. You'll maybe meet players you won't want to travel with again, but most likely you'll meet ones you do!

Most of all- have fun! Playing with others is what makes EUO different than other games. To get the most out of it, use the Party feature!
