There's a great picture from the forums, but I can't work out to link it here. I'm also vaugely an old-time player, and selected my avatar before you could see them ingame. Thus I was bald for most of my early career, until transformed into a gremlin. I much prefer being a gremlin.

I've made quite a few of the maps, and love putting in NPC's with lots of dialogues, and signs. (When I remember to send them & don't delete them). I can't work out the quest system, otherwise I'd make my maps with quests attached - if there appears to be a NPC who wants to give you a quest on a map, but won't, its probably because I've written it in, but lack the skill to make it into a quest ;) When I started making maps, the Maped program had to have every number entered by hand, was only checkable by trial and error, and was vastly more primitive - if there seems to be differing degrees of complexity to maps, its largely due to this. I might go back over the old maps updating them all if I ever have time. I also "ever so often" edit other people's maps when so needed to, when time permits - and love seeing other maps, although editing tends to ruin the surprise.
Since I've been slacking, I might not be the one who should be saying this. But I think the egg might agree with me on this. If you are going to make a page for a town/dungeon/other place, can you try to follow the format of previous places? Check out Nordhaven or Nordhaven Jail for an example. I wouldn't suggest listing NPCs in dungeon's though (although, I guess it's up to you). Mostly, I'd just like to see the coords, with a breif discription of the location and a 'fun facts' header (even if it's empty).

Then again, I'm only saying this because that's what I started to doing and I think it looks nice. Perhaps egg should have the final word.
My only real advice at the moment is to keep it formal. The Modding EUO page is pretty terrible at the moment - full of smileys, chatty, references to 'egg this, egg that' which I hate. While references to being drunk and aussie might be factual, they are thoroughly innappropriate for a game manual, especially when I'm actually trying to scrub up the image of this game. Please read the rest of the manual, and bear in mind it's not quite as formal as I'd like it (being mostly cut/pastes from forums & the old wiki). I think scg's Bestiary page is a good example of how the manual should be.

I'm not sure if there should even be a fun facts section at all, and I'm not really into the list of NPC's. Having said that, stick with this template for the time being. For townes, I think the Mon Ferrato page is a good example. There aren't any complete examples for dungeons.
I've deleted the modding EUO page, and message recieved. I'll keep it formal from now on. I always liked the way the compendium gave a bit of 'fluff' info about townes, and was thinking more of that when I entered my entries, not just solid facts.

I'm a gremlin - I have sharp pointy teeth set at groin level, and a bad temper (although I'm usually nice).

Check the forums for the email!

I'm also an ex-GM, probably due to my rather over-zealous protection of EUO, and distaste for cheesy tactics & game abuse. I'm noted for persecuting certain players for cheating, then being entirely vindicated when proved correct - and unlike Kybare or Khelben was not a popular GM by any means. But yes, I'm an ex GM - my excuse is that my wand snapped ;p

Like Kybare, you can put stuff underneath if you so wish - r/l I'm a bit of a hippy / environmentalist person, and easily get drawn into pointless internet debates. I also did a bit of philosophy, and so love Ultima for its Ethical structure, and wrote the guide to virtues, and the guide to Maped.

This account was created on Tuesday, August 16, 2005.

I am probably the oldest and yet still active (not counting Egg) players of EUO. I have made several maps including Bakyre and the basic design for the University and Troll Bridge.

I am also the resident quest maker in EUO. I've made all the quests in Bakyre and the class specific quests. Soon, a large number of new quests will be added designed for players of higher levels.

Please feel free to add anything you want to about me here (in fact, I'd like people to add stuff here about me!). If you do, leave you username next to whatever you write. Otherwise, I might make an "Anonymous Statements" section for people who don't want to be known. After a comment is made, I will add my own comment to it (if I see fit).

I'm a gremlin - I have sharp pointy teeth set at groin level, and a bad temper (although I'm usually nice).

I also vaguely edit other people's maps when so needed to, when time permits - and love seeing other maps, although editing tends to ruin the surprise.

But yes, I'm an [b]ex[/b] GM - my excuse is that my wand snapped ;p

I'm also secretly in awe of one of the game creator's friend's tongues, which I reckon is bigger than that lead singer of Kiss. ==How New Sosaria Came to Be==
Already explained in flowery english here: History of New Sosaria.

In the canon (ie OSI) version of events, Mondain's gem was shattered and destroyed. Each shard of the gem created an alternate picture of Sosaria with its own history and future. First there was Sosaria, probably not unlike the Sosaria known in Ultima III. * 071: the 8 shrines to virtue are finally completed

Characters
Lord Eggleton
Benevolant ruler or something; currently MIA in the canon-shard on a mission to rescue Lord British from the underworld. Rumour has it that he forgot the sandalwood box, and won't be coming back to New Sosaria any time soon.

Estorrath
Is a retired member of the great council of wizards. Has a rivalry with Nestor of the library.

Is it merely a coincidence that his name bears an uncanny resembelance to that of the Shadowlord of Hatred, Astaroth ?

Old Henry
Esterrath's older brother, likes fishing and isn't as silly as he seems. Another great wizard that was, he knows the cure for lycanthropy.

Lord Byron
Lord of Tanelorne. Wife has died recently and until he gets his bronze statue of her, he remains sad. Has 3 advisors working for him: Shamino the rogue, Virgil the Mage and Greyson the fighter. Used to run with Patrick, Estorrath and Golwid the minotaur king under Kaza.

Virgil
Byron's advisor, mage, once on the council of wizards.

Greyson
Byron's advisor, fighter.

Shamino
Byron's advisor, rogue. This is the same Shamino that Lord Eggleton first met when he stepped through the moongate and into Sosaria for the first time.

Lord Broden
Brother of Lord Byron (hence the same avatar). A player, missing in action. His legacy: an empty keep south of Mirkwood.

This castle needs to be taken over: maybe appropriated by some new overlord upstart of Sosaria west, or by hostiles (to become a hunting ground), or maybe by some friendly political faction.

Nestor the Librarian
Nestor is in charge of the recovery of lost books, but he is probably also cheif librarian. Among other things, he orders the 'recovery' of Estorrath's Journal (for reasons unknown), which contains nothing but recipes for 'dropped pie'. Other books he needs recovery of:

*Chronicles of Nchuleft
*Beyond good and Evil
*Necromancer
*Interview with the Vampire
*Estorrath's Journal

Conrad
Nestor's younger brother and head librarian of the Bakyre Library. While he runs a smaller library than his brother, he has the same fascination with books and is wiser than he lets on. He is looking to recover the following books:

*The Emerging Underworld

Saldath, Zazaram & Titania
In the spirit of the age, a mighty adventuring band set out to explore the newly created / accessible Underworld, to spread the Virtues across the whole of Sosaria. Admidst their number were the mage Zazaram, the warrior Saldath and his bride, the tinker Titianna. They had been at the forefront of clearing the Dungeons of dangerous creatures and pacifying the land. Their leader Saldath had created an order of Paladins and created many Keeps dedicated to the Virtues (eg Thantos Keep). Unfortunately, they discovered a sliver of the Shard of Hatred, guarded by many Balrons, in a fortress deep under the Underworld itself. Saldath, sensing great power in it, kept it, and his lover Titania forged it into an amulet that gave him power over Hellspawn and martial prowess. Determined to use this force for good he and his companions sought to cleanse the Underworld. However, since the sliver is a conduit for the Shadowlords, his nature became slowly more and more extreme and fervent, his rage (which he still thought of as fervour for the Virtues) leading to a genocidal pogrom against all non-humans. His lover, Titianna, slowly became infected with blood lust as well, until she was transformed into a Vampire ... As their pogrom continued, they began to view the unvirtuous (in their now twisted eyes) as beneath human as well, and eventually sought to purge the whole of New Sosaria of those deemed 'unworthy'. Thus began a brief but bloody reign of terror, with many of the old towns levelled.

Although Saldath was finally defeated by Lord Eggleton McEye, his two adventuring comrades escaped, and still lurk amongst New Sosaria, hatching foul plots of revenge!

Lord Percy, Sir Markham, Sir Larant
Members of the order of Paladins founded by Saldath, Thantos Keep is their base in the Mountain Pass. Whilst once a shining beacon of Valor in that part of New Sosaria, rumour has it that it has come under an evil influence - certainly none of the previous messengers or pilgrims seeking it out have returned. Adventurers have been asked to investigate this further, and see what has happen and if possible solve the mystery of what has happened to the keep.

Patrick
The mayor of Bakyre and an ex-adventurer and ex-rogue. Patrick is always willing to listen to the tales of other adventurers and will share a pint most anyone. However, don't be surprised if he tries to swindle you out of some gold in some manner of speaking.

King Golwid
A local Minotaur lord who's taken up residence in the old throne room of the once dwarven capital Kazadoom. He's unseemingly amicable considering his hordes of minions will kill and eat any would be adventurer on sight. Old buds with Patrick, estranged from Byron and Estorrath.

Shadowlords
Astaroth, Falleni and

Although the Sliver of Hatred has been sealed away, the shadowlords are slowly trying to regain the victory they almost won. Although not really manifest yet (in that they can be defeated and temporarily banished by mortals) they are slowly regaining strength.

Lord Percy
Or more formally, Lord Percy Hestle-Weith, he was a member of the famous 'Adventuring Seven' who were explorers based at the University many years ago. Each member would set off each year with a team of graduates to find new wonders. Nothing is known of his current status, other than that he disappeared exploring the deserts of Tanelorne. The University is known to be seeking information about his whereabouts.

Other Big Events
Disappearance of the Dwarves
The dwarves last refuge, Kazadoom, the Dwarven Capital, was overrun by nasties and the dwarves became extinct. The only remnants of the dwarves left in New Sosaria are their nasty green cousins, the gnomes, who are often mistaken for gremlins.

There is a book, Chronicles of Nchuleft, referenced in one of the book quests. This is of course a dwarven book from Morrowind.

Ultima canon, in U3, also had elves, bobbits and fuzzies :X

Goldwid and his merry band of Minotaurs move into the bottom of Kazadoom
The disappearance of the dwarves happened long before Goldwid got into Kaza and started taking over. Infact, I'd be tempted now to convert the lower sections of Kaza into some sort of non-hostile town, rather than just never ending baddies with Golwid in the middle. Golwid is some sort of happy mino and he should be leading by example. Maybe there could be a battleground or frontlines where there are good-aligned mino's spawning, fighting off ettins and the like ... Maybe the Royal Banquet and Meeting Hall could be the place for this neverending spawner battle!

Trammel being cast from its orbit
Happened some time after Exodus was defeated, destroyed, whatever.

The death of everyone in Whalebone
Apparently, according to Jocasta, a small party consisting of Jaana, Sentri and the Avatar gated in. Everyone caught some sort of weird-earth plague and died after the party visited the local brothel. Jaana cursed the mayor so that in death he would live on as a demi liche. Even the cows live on as zombies.

If Lord Eggleton is meant to be the Avatar in the canon version of events, it must be said that Lord Eggleton certainly wasn't a part of this merry band. This Avatar and this party would be from some other twisted shard/reality.

Or the Story/history of snowy Island could be updated/rewritten.

Lord Percy
Or more formally, Lord Percy Hestle-Weith, he was a member of the famous 'Adventuring Seven' who were explorers based at the university of Tanelorne.

How New Sosaria Came to Be
Already explained in flowery english here: History of New Sosaria.

In the canon (ie OSI) version of events, Mondain's gem was shattered and destroyed. Each shard of the gem created an alternate picture of Sosaria with its own history and future. New Sosaria that we know in EUO is one of these shards. Its timeline co-exists with the canon history - it could be considered an alternate history or even a parallel universe.

So with the destruction of the gem came the creation of New Sosaria's own timeline, landscape, populace and version of events. The more time passes, the more the emerging history of New Sosaria diverges from the story chronicled in Ultima I-V and beyond.

Landscape
First there was Sosaria, probably not unlike the Sosaria known in Ultima III. There was great upheaval etc, and the land was reformed into Sosaria - what we know as the western hemisphere of New Sosaria today. Tanelorne was yet to be discovered.
* Lord Eggleton defeats Mondain, Minax and Exodus, possibly with help from a 'stranger'
* Kazadoom, the last refuge of the dwarves, is invaded by giants, orcs, and minotaurs, and the dwarves are made extinct
* with the destruction of exodus and the end of the dark age, the lands are reformed, the moon 'Trammel' is cast out of its orbit, and Sosaria becomes Ye Olde Sossaria
* Kaswell Keep and the New Sosaria Library are completed. Nestor made head librarian.
* Tanelorne discovered (much earlier than in-game time but who's going to know) - the world consisting of Ye Olde Sossaria (renamed to Sosaria West) and Tanelorne collectively known as New Sosaria
* Lord Eggleton steps back through a portal to do the quest of the avatar then comes back (as chronicled in Ultima IV)
* Lord Eggleton decrees that there isn't enough 'virtue' and the shrines are created
* Patrick, Estorrath, Byron and Golwid part ways. Golwid assumes control of Kazadoom (or some of it). Patrick moves to Bakyre (with his fortune). Byron and Estorrath move to Tanelorne
Determined to use this force for good he and his companions sought to cleanse the Underworld. ==Characters==

Members of the above order of Paladins, all now dead and haunting Mountain Pass.

Shadowlords
1 spawned under forest, 1 spawned at end of lunacy, and 2 spawned at end of monstary. There should only be 3 total.

Although the Sliver of Hatred has been sealed away, the shadowlords are slowly trying to regain the victory they almost won. Although not really manifest yet (in that they can be defeated and temporarily banished by mortals) they are slowly regaining strength.

<br clear='all'>

Timeline
The 3 digit number number is a year. 000 represents the creation of New Sosaria. (each RL day is 1 month EUO. There are 30 euo years in 1 RL year. Some of these timeline dates correllate directly with events in the creation of EUO)

* with the destruction of the shard of immortality in the Canon-universe, the EUO-verse is created with it's own timeline
* Lord Eggleton arrives through a moongate, befriends Shamino, becomes king (this actually happened before the above, if you can believe that)

Talking to NPCs
In many cities in New Sosaria, you will come across NPCs (Non-Player Characters). Go next to one and press t plus the directional arrow towards said NPC. The NPC will then state something. Alternatively, stand next to the NPC and state a word using local chat. If the word you state is important to the NPC, the NPC will respond. Otherwise, the NPC will respond with "I cannot help thee with that."

Suggested Words
All NPCs will respond to the following words:
* Name
* Job
* Time

Ultima V parser explained
The Ultima V parser links words individually to other statements. Thus if you ask "job" and get a reply "I am a baker" you could type "baker" to get more information. Unlike Ultima VI, Ultima V gave you no hints to what to type. This is the same for the NPC's in EUO: the best thing to remember is that many of the keywords will be obvious. Thus "I am waiting for the return of my beloved" might be triggered by "return" or "beloved". The best thing to do is type frantically at an NPC as you would in Zork ~ although you might not get a response, you will be surprised at the depth that some writers have gone into making these dialogue trees. This is mostly just background and them telling a story, as quests are triggered differently - but it can lead to some amusing responses!

For many of the Quest NPC's, there is a lot of back story, and it can be rewarding to find out just what the quest is actually about - for instance, the NPC's in the Mountain Pass have a whole story behind them. Some writers (Kybare, Catherine) have added Easter Eggs into their dialogues, which are intended to give an added kick to players who spend time exploring EUO - in the Mountain Pass, try finding a hidden NPC and asking him about his creator!

Quests
Some NPCs have quests for you to do. Most can be retreived after asking the NPC what their job is and following the dialog from there. Any given quests will start and end with one word, although each quest may have a different word. There are several types of quests (see below) and each has you do something different. In the end, you will often receive a reward and experience (where applicable).

However, you may find it that an NPC has a quest, but will not let you start it. This occurs if you haven't done a previous quest. For example, you cannot do the Nordhaven guard quests until you have helped Bill the Jailer in the Nordhaven Jail.

Types of Quests
* Kill Quests
The NPC will ask you to kill a monster at some location. Find the monster and kill it. If it drops anything, pick it up. Return to the NPC for your reward.
* Return Quests
The NPC will ask you to find them an object. Obtain the object, or find the location of the object. Pick it up and take it back to the NPC for your reward. You will lose the object you found.
* Goto Quests
The NPC will ask you to find or go to a specific location. Find the location and walk over it. You will immediately finish the quest and be given your reward.
* Obtain Item Quests
The NPC will ask you to get an item. Find the item in question and return when you have it. You will be given your reward while keeping the item.
* No Goal Quests
These quests have no goals attached to them. Upon stating the word to start the quest, you will actually finish the quest and be given your reward. While this quest type may seem strange, it is used to prevent the player from learning information before starting the quest and giving the player an item needed for the quest.

Class Specific Quests
On the regular server, Lord Byron of Camerrata Keep has a quest for you to do. Upon completing the quest, you will receive Lord Byron's Certificate. Take this certificate to one of his three advisors. You can then obtain quests from that advisor which are primarily designed to be tailored to each class. For example, mage quests are likely to give mage items as a reward. Note that with any one character, you can only work for one advisor. Be careful which you choose as there is no way to reselect later!

Lord Byron's Advisors
* Shamino is the rogue advisor. He can be found in the wooded area west of the main hall.
* Greyson is the fighter advisor. He can be found in a western room of the keep.
* Virgil is the mage advisor. He can be found in an easter room of the keep.
