Magic is similar to Ultima in that spells are cast by chanting words (eg An Nox), however, spells do not need to be mixed nor ingredents needed. The player can only cast spells that he already knows - and to learn new spells one must acquire the appropriate scrolls.

Scrolls can be bought from your nearest Scribe-merchant. To read a scroll in order to learn the spell, simply press 'shift-C', select the scroll and the spell will be learned. Once you've learned a spell, depending on the spell you the different acronym for it. For example, for the spell Vas Ort Grav, you'd type "cvog"(cast: vas ort grav). You can also cast the scroll instead of learning it by using the R command which is a way of casting that has 100% success rate but can only be used once per scroll.

Spells range anywhere from circle 1 to circle 8. The higher the circle, the harder the spell is to cast and the more mana it uses. Once you have 100% magery, you'll have have 100% casting rate of all spells.

You will not be able to cast effectively without a staff weapon(a crook, a shillelagh, or a staff). Your casting rate is slighty sped up with a staff weapon equipped. You cannot wear light, medium, or heavy armour or else your casting rate will be slowed down.

On Alpha, the scrolls are replaced by tomes. Tomes cannot be used with shift-c.
