Fighter Skills

Weapon skills

There are a number weapon skills - longswords, foils, maces, polearms, axes, shortswords, ranged and unarmed. Anyone can use any weapon, but to use it effectively, you should be trained in that skill. The higher your skill with a particular weapon, the highter your attack strength will be when a weapon of that skill base is eqipped.

When you find or buy weapons, their required skill is displayed with their damage and weight, so there shouldn't be any confusion as to what does what.

  • Longswords
  • Maces
  • Axes
  • Polearms
  • Unarmed

Unarmed combat

If your really brave (or stupid), you may choose to only wear non-armour (eg: gi, cap, gloves) and have no weapon (or an UA-weapon) equipped. If this is the case, then you'll be fighting unarmed (and unarmoured). Think of it as fighting monk-style.

Unarmed can be just as effective as regular weapon fighting, so don't be discouraged. It's very fast, and inflicts a lot of critical hits. It is also advantageous in that you carry less armour, so you'll be able to carry more loot.

Tactics skill

Skill in tactics gives a boost to Attack Strength and Defense. Tactics will raise automatically when attacking with a fighter weapon skill, ie: Maces, Longswords, Polearms, Axes or Unarmed.

Block skill (shield use)

Using a shield, you can "Block", or negate some attacks you are hit by. The chance of blocking an attack is based on your skill in "Block", naturally. Different shields may have different effects.

Tips

  • Though a fighter skill, block can be used by mages and rogues, with their leftover skill points, though a rogue cannot dodge when using a shield.
  • If you're a fighter with a good amount of HP and fairly high Defense, just letting low level monsters attack you for a prolonged period of time, while using a shield, is a good way to "grind" your skill in "Block".

Lockpicking

Get yourself some lockpicks from the provisioners and simply use them on a locked door or chest. Depending on your skill, you may actually unlock the door or chest. Some locks can never be picked, and often picks break, so keep a good supply of them if this is your bag.

The shortcut key for unlock is j + dir.

Trap Detect and Disarm

Many chests, locked or not, may also trapped. Use the search function (s+dir) to search a chest for a trap. If your skill is high enough, you will detect a trap if one is present. Traps may also be present on the ground, and searching the ground may show up a trap if one is present.

To disarm a trap, use a probe (shift+j+dir) on the trap.

Stealth

Stealth is the art of moving silently and without being noticed. You can attempt to first hide by pressing H, then moving while hidden. Success in either hiding or moving while hiding will improve your stealth.

You cannot hide when there are players, monsters or NPCs around which can see you, or if you have a light source.

Chances for hiding and moving stealthily are greatly reduced when wearing medium and heavy armour.

Once hidden, you can attempt to backstab (and kill) a target - you must buy the "Backstab" skill, and then "cast" it as you would a spell. Binding "Backstab" to one of the "f" keys (f1-f6) will help quite a bit, also. This allows you to use the keystroke shortcuts, which are shown in the keyboard guide. You must have a shortsword or dagger equipped to pull off a backstab. Backstabbing success is determined by your stealth skill, the target's level, and for player targets, the lightness of their armour. It's very hard to BS a player wearing plate armour, for example.

Mage Skills

Consists of Magery, Sorcery and Piety. Please see the Magic and Spellcasting page.
